MPD Newsletters
Behind the Badge is the "Official Newsletter of the MPD" and it is usually published monthly.
"The Badge" as it is affectionately called is utilized to communicate the different events that occur monthly around the Department. "The Badge" became a reality in the Spring of 1993 under the guidance of its founding and current editor, Lt. Susan Lowe. The Donut Diaries is the Health Newsletter of the MPD and is published monthly to dare to keep cops off of donuts. "The Donut" has become the most popular MPD newsletter with its health tips, monthly healthy recipes, and info on family issues.
The idea behind the health newsletter came from Sgt. Harold Bruce who is also a practicing nurse.
Sgt. Bruce approached Lt. Lowe about designing the newsletter due to her experience with "The Badge." Lt. Lowe came up with the "Donut Diary" concept and Sgt. Bruce wrote the first set of articles. In August of 1995, the first issue of "The Donut Diaries" hit the precincts with rave reviews. It was also a featured article in The Commercial Appeal , as well as, a TV news segment on WREG/Channel 3.
Please note:
The Donut Diaries have recently been on hiatus due to Sgt. Bruce's retirement but will return soon.
