Beyond the Ring: MPD Officers Mentoring Youth at the MPD Boxing Gym

Inside the MPD Boxing Gym, the work goes far beyond punches and footwork. It’s a space where discipline is learned, confidence is built, and young people are guided toward purpose. Through consistency, structure, and hands-on mentorship, MPD officers help shape paths that extend well beyond the ring.

For more than a decade, officers like Brian Hall and Reginald Foster, each with over 15 years of service, have dedicated their time to mentoring and coaching inside the gym. Their steady presence provides encouragement, leadership, and a sense of belonging for every person who walks through the doors.

One powerful example of that impact is Barak Muhammad, now a Police Service Technician with MPD. Once mentored inside the boxing gym, his journey reflects how guidance, commitment, and opportunity can change the direction of a life.

On Saturday, January 10, 2026, Muhammad reached a major milestone, improving his record to 4–0 and winning the Lightweight Championship at the Ferguson Invitational in Southaven, Mississippi. The event served as a cancer fundraiser, and he secured the title with a second-round knockout—demonstrating the discipline, preparation, and confidence developed through years of mentorship inside the MPD Boxing Gym.

The MPD Boxing Gym is located at the Memphis Office of Youth Services, 315 South Hollywood Street, Memphis, TN 38104.

Youth, families, and community members interested in the MPD Boxing Gym are encouraged to visit the gym and speak with staff in person to learn more about participation and opportunities.

The work happening inside the MPD Boxing Gym continues to strengthen individuals, build trust, and support a Stronger, Safer Memphis.
