MPD Officer Critically Injured in Traffic Stop Shooting; Suspect Identified

On February 26 at 8:09 p.m., Officer Torres-Molina of Mt. Moriah Station conducted a traffic stop on a white vehicle at Aloha Avenue and South Perkins. During that stop, Officer Torres-Molina was shot by the occupant of the vehicle.
Two additional officers responded to the scene, one immediately rendering aid and the other driving him directly to the hospital. That swift action made a huge difference in the current medical state of our officer.
He is currently in critical but stable condition and is receiving excellent care.
Throughout the night and at present, we have deployed multiple resources in the search for the suspect, who has been identified as Danell Jarvis Maxwell. Maxwell was last seen wearing all black clothing with a reflective vest. He is described as a Black male, approximately 5’10” and 200 pounds, with dark brown eyes, a low haircut, and a salt and pepper gray beard. He is approximately 40 years old and is considered to be armed and dangerous.
A warrant has been issued charging Maxwell with Attempted First-Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony.
We are asking anyone who sees this individual or has information regarding his whereabouts to contact the Memphis Police Department immediately or call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH. Do not approach the suspect.
“This was a direct act of violence against a law enforcement officer serving this city. We will use every available resource to locate and apprehend the suspect,” said Chief C.J. Davis. “Our focus remains on the recovery of our officer and ensuring the safety of this community.”
We will provide updates as they become available.
