On May 31, 2026, Memphis Police Department officers and investigators arrested an 18-year-old suspect believed to be responsible for a series of violent crimes spanning multiple days, resulting in the clearance of five separate criminal investigations.
At approximately 5:00 a.m., officers responded to a shots-fired call in the 900 block of Chatwood Street. Investigators learned that two victims had been robbed at gunpoint after leaving a location on Macon Avenue. During the incident, the suspects demanded money and threatened to shoot the victims before fleeing in a black Nissan Maxima.
The victims followed the suspects’ vehicle to the 900 block of Chatwood Street, where one of the suspects fired multiple rounds at them, striking a victim’s vehicle.
Just over an hour later, officers located the suspect vehicle traveling on Jackson Avenue. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled, leading officers on a pursuit through city streets while disregarding traffic signals and driving into oncoming traffic. With assistance from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, officers safely stopped the vehicle and took the driver, identified as Juan Garay, 18, into custody.
Investigators determined the Nissan Maxima had been reported stolen and quickly began connecting Garay to several additional violent crimes committed over the previous days.
The investigation linked Garay to:
• A May 27 auto theft in the 1100 block of Weiner Street involving the stolen Nissan Maxima.
• A May 27 armed theft of a generator from the 5200 block of Boswell Avenue.
• A May 27 armed theft of a power washer from the 4400 block of Summer Avenue, during which the victim was threatened with a firearm.
• A May 30 armed robbery at a gas station in the 4100 block of Jackson Avenue, where a victim reported two armed suspects demanded his money.
As a result of the investigation, five separate cases were cleared and Garay was charged with two counts of Attempted First-Degree Murder, three counts of Aggravated Robbery, three counts of Aggravated Assault, Employment of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, Theft of Property $10,000–$60,000 (Motor Vehicle), Theft of Property $1,000 or Less, Reckless Driving, Evading Arrest in an Automobile, and Driving While License Suspended, Revoked, or Canceled.
The investigation remains ongoing.
