Fugitive Unit Apprehends Suspect Connected to the Deadly May 17 Shooting

On May 22, 2026, the Memphis Police Department Fugitive Unit located and arrested 19-year-old Jayvon Wilson, who was wanted in connection with two separate shootings that occurred on May 17, including one that resulted in a homicide.

At approximately 10:03 a.m. on May 17, officers responded to a shooting in the 2100 block of Driftwood Avenue. Officers located 44-year-old Mario Butlers suffering from critical injuries. He was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Investigators determined that Butlers had been involved in an argument with Jayvon Wilson prior to the shooting, and Wilson fled the scene before officers arrived.

Homicide investigators quickly identified Wilson as the suspect and obtained warrants charging him with Second-Degree Murder, three counts of Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, and Reckless Endangerment with a Deadly Weapon.

Later that day, at approximately 5:45 p.m., officers responded to a shots-fired call in the 400 block of Foote Lane. Officers responded to a residence that had been struck multiple times by gunfire. Nine people were inside the home at the time of the shooting; fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Investigators determined that Wilson was also responsible for that incident. Additional warrants were issued charging him with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, and Vandalism between $1,000 and $2,500.

Following an intensive search and numerous investigative leads, the MPD Fugitive Unit located Wilson on Friday and took him into custody without incident in the 4500 Block of Sawmill Drive.
