Memphis Police Department Urges Residents to Help Prevent Vehicle and Property Crimes

While overall crime across the City of Memphis continues to decline, the Memphis Police Department is reminding residents to take proactive steps to protect their vehicles and homes after identifying a recent uptick in property crimes within the Tillman Station area.

Recent incidents involving thefts from vehicles and burglaries, particularly at vacant or unoccupied properties, serve as an important reminder that criminals often look for easy opportunities. Taking a few simple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

Protect Your Vehicle

•    Lock your doors and roll up all windows.

•    Never leave your vehicle running and unattended.

•    Remove your keys or key fob and never leave firearms, wallets, purses, electronics, or other valuables inside your vehicle. If valuables must remain, secure them out of sight before arriving at your destination.

•    Park in well-lit, highly visible areas whenever possible.

•    Consider using a steering wheel lock or other anti-theft device.

•    Report suspicious activity immediately.

Protect Your Home

•    Lock all doors and secure all windows.

•    Install an alarm system, motion-activated lighting, or security cameras whenever possible.

•    Register compatible security cameras with Connect2Memphis to assist investigators when crimes occur.

•    If your property is vacant or undergoing renovations, check on it regularly and ask a trusted neighbor or family member to do the same.

•    Keep vacant properties maintained by collecting mail, removing newspapers or flyers, and maintaining the yard to give the appearance that the property is occupied.

•    Record serial numbers and photograph valuable property to assist investigators in identifying and recovering stolen items.

•    Request a directed patrol if your home will be vacant for an extended period.

•    Join or establish a Neighborhood Watch group to help strengthen communication and improve neighborhood safety.

•    Report suspicious persons or activity immediately.
